On 10–11 September 2026, Łódź hosted the international conference Sustainable development and other paradigms and concepts in the context of contemporary civilization trends – global and local dimensions. It was preceded on 9 September by the workshop Sustainable Development in Academic Practice: Between Global Trends and Local Action (Zrównoważony rozwój w praktyce akademickiej: między globalnymi trendami a lokalnym działaniem).

The conference was organised by the University of Lodz and the Polish Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, in cooperation with UNIC (European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition).

The programme comprised two plenary sessions and 17 parallel sessions. Session 7 (10 September), “Municipalities and Businesses Facing the Challenges of Sustainable Development”, featured a presentation by Dr Paulina Legutko-Kobus (SGH Warsaw School of Economics) entitled “Building Urban Resilience as a Response to Migration Challenges”. She showed that approaches to urban resilience are changing. Resilience is a multidimensional concept: alongside digital, infrastructural and environmental resilience, social resilience is attracting growing attention. A socially resilient city strengthens cooperation between different stakeholder groups, especially in the face of humanitarian crises and migration. One of the key dimensions of resilience is inclusiveness – a city that cares for all its residents, including excluded and disadvantaged groups, and provides them with equal support and access to resources.
